Southern Cross Catholic College: A Walkable Bayside Campus at the Heart of Scarborough

Along Scarborough Road on the Redcliffe Peninsula, Southern Cross Catholic College (Secondary Campus) blends quality education with a relaxed bayside lifestyle. Families here enjoy an easy walk to the school, the beach, and local cafés—making it a particularly well-connected educational community.

In 1995, seven Catholic primary and secondary schools on the Redcliffe Peninsula amalgamated to form Southern Cross Catholic College (SCCC) — a union of heritage institutions guided by the charisms of the Brigidine Sisters, the Josephites, the De La Salle Brothers and Monsignor Bartholomew Frawley. Over the intervening decades, the College has grown from that foundational moment to become one of the largest co-educational Catholic colleges in the state, while maintaining its commitment to regional community and continuity of care. That history is visible today in the four-campus structure, the community wraparound of families over many years, and the blend of tradition with modern educational practice.

  • The Scarborough Secondary Campus (Years 7-12) is the flagship senior site, located by the bay and serving the older students in a dynamic, full-school environment.
  • The Scarborough Primary Campus (Prep-Year 6) sits nearby, allowing local families a seamless transition from primary into the Secondary Campus — continuity that many parents appreciate.
  • The Woody Point Primary Campus (Prep-Year 6) serves the northern part of the peninsula, providing the same values, curriculum and community feel in a slightly quieter residential setting.
  • The Kippa-Ring Primary Campus (Prep-Year 6) completes the network, giving families in the Kippa-Ring area the same College identity, and ensuring that when students move into Years 7–12 they join the same College community rather than change schools.

This network means that once a child is enrolled at one of the primary campuses their place at the senior campus is effectively secured—reducing transition stress and fostering long-term community ties.

Academic Strengths

Southern Cross Catholic College delivers a comprehensive learning journey from Prep to Year 12 across four campuses, with the Secondary site at 307 Scarborough Road serving as the senior academic hub. The College aims to “maximise the abilities of all students” through broad subject and vocational options, co-curricular activities and sports.
A one-to-one laptop program from Year 3 onwards supports digital readiness, while the College reports a proud record of academic and sporting achievement across year levels. Year 9 NAPLAN averages in 2022 were around the 570 mark across key domains, according to Catholic Schools Guide data. The official 2023 Annual Report lists attendance at 89.2 percent, and a Brisbane Catholic Education feature credits the Assessment Capable Learners Initiative with driving ongoing improvement.

Character and Values

As Queensland’s only Lasallian college, SCCC is guided by five principles: faith in the presence of God, respect for all persons, inclusive community, quality education, and concern for the poor and social justice. Students experience a strong Catholic community that combines learning with service.
The Middle Years curriculum is framed around “four worlds – personal, environmental, technological and social,” linking study with purpose. The College also has a rich sporting tradition across swimming, athletics, cross-country, basketball, touch football, rugby league, cricket, AFL, netball, futsal and soccer.

Southern Cross Catholic College Alumni

The College’s alumni network is a tangible reflection of the school’s values in action, illustrating how students go on to make significant contributions in a diverse range of fields. Among its past students:

  • Thomas Armstrong‑Robley, who has forged a career as a director, entertainer and emcee, cites his time at SCCC as formative in his communication skills and confidence to perform and lead.
  • Blake Cochrane, a Paralympic gold medallist, attributes part of his sporting resilience and grounded mindset to the supportive environment and sporting culture at the College.
These examples underscore the value families and students continue to derive from the school—beyond just the classroom, into leadership, excellence and lifelong networks. (sccc.qld.edu.au)

Connected Neighbourhood & Walkability

The Secondary Campus at 307 Scarborough Road benefits enormously from its bayside setting. From the school site, residents can access local streets, giving direct links to parks, cafés, the beach and bus routes. For many students, mornings begin with sea breezes and a short walk to school—a lifestyle advantage that families comment on often. Living in the area means the school, local shops and seaside are all within reach.
